En los años 60, un puñado de fotógrafos comenzaron a desafiar la práctica establecida de documentar lo desconocido y exótico y dirigieron sus miradas hacia lo ordinario y lo cotidiano adoptando una postura subjetiva e introspectiva. Fotógrafos como Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus y Lee Frielander y más tarde Stephen Shore y los Bechers fueron pioneros en nuevas narrativas y prepararon el escenario para fotógrafos como Doug Rickard, Alec Soth y Richard Billingham.
Este taller se enfocará en explorar la subjetividad de la fotografía documental contemporánea y la importancia de desarrollar un estilo personal. Los estudiantes deben tener experiencia técnica en fotografía y un cuerpo de trabajo terminado o en curso, o una idea que quieren desarrollar. Durante el taller revisaremos el trabajo que ilustra la evolución de la fotografía documental desde los Nuevos Documentalistas hasta las tendencias contemporáneas en el trabajo impulsado por el concepto. Los asistentes participarán desarrollando sus propios proyectos. Recibirán critica sobre sus proyectos y proporcionarán critica a otros durante las discusiones grupales. Además habrá ejercicios prácticos de edición y tareas sencillas. Cada día, parte de la clase se reservará para revisar y evaluar el progreso del grupo.
In the 60s a handful of photographers began to challenge the established practice of documenting the unfamiliar and exotic and directed their focus towards the ordinary and the everyday adopting a more subjective and introspective stance. Photographers like Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus and Lee Frielander and later Stephen Shore and the Bechers pioneered new narratives and set the stage for photographers like Doug Rickard, Alec Soth and Richard Billingham.
This workshop will focus on exploring the subjective nature of contemporary documentary photography and the importance of developing a personal style.
Students must have some technical experience in photography and a body of work completed or in progress, or an idea of what they want to develop.
During the workshop we will review work that illustrates the evolution of documentary photography from the New Documentarians to contemporary trends in today’s concept-driven work.
Attendees will participate developing their own projects. They will receive feedback on their projects and provide feedback to others during group discussions. In addition to critique and photo theory there will be practical editing exercises and homework assignments.
Each day part of the class will be set aside to review and evaluate the group’s progress.
